  • I have a job!

I just landed an internship-to-hire with Unreal Marketing in Conshohocken, PA. They're bringing on two or three interns to work on the creative and design side of things. I could be doing anything from package design to website building. Tomorrow afternoon I'm heading in to fill out all the paperwork. I have yet to make the drive in rush hour, and that's something I'm really not looking forward to... but I have people. (Maybe they'll at least be able to show me some back routes.)

I was starting to wonder how I'd be able to pay bills if I couldn't find something soon. And finding something soon seemed quite improbable. God is faithful!

  • On Art and Decoration

And at every point a justification must be found in reason. Of course we weren’t teetotalers about fancy work, but it must be kept subordinate, and even fancy work should grow out of legitimate occasion. What is decoration but that which is seemly and appropriate?

  • I knew it.

I knew this would happen. I knew I was getting screwed. THANKS.

    *huff*
Last semester, I took the senior seminars in Interactive so I could finish the concentration and, you know, get a job doing that kind of thing. Key words: GET A JOB. This field is competitive, even more so with the crappy e-word. I wanted to make sure I was learning everything I could so I'd have the skills I needed to land A JOB. So I was quite disappointed (understatement of my college career) that my professor decided to teach us ActionScript 2. See, the semester previous, we had another prof who was teaching us ActionScript 3, because it's the current version. And I was heading into these classes expecting to learn more AS 3, because it's the current version. But no, he decided to teach us AS 2, which is the not current version, a.k.a. useless knowledge because this is a competitive industry in technology where knowing old versions of things will not get you A JOB.

Today, a recruiter saw my resumé online and called me. A recruiter. Called me. He left a voicemail and wants to discuss my skills in ActionScript 3. THAT'S ALSO KNOWN AS A POSSIBLE JOB OFFER. What do I know about AS 3? A few lines of code. Now I have to talk to the guy and try to convince him not to stop listening after he hears "not exactly a master of ActionScript 3."

    DAMMIT.

  • Job-Hunting in a Horrendous Economy

Well, I've officially begun my job hunt. It's scary. I have lots of job postings bookmarked, but I'm afraid to apply to them because I'm just graduating college. They want things like three years of experience, a portfolio of websites you've done for clients, mastery of ASP and Java, experience managing a team. I don't have those things. I have the skills for them (not all of them, but some of them, anyhow) and no way to prove it. :( My internship supervisor gave me some advice: get on freelancing lists. A lot of employers can't afford to take anyone full-time, but they still need help. I'm going to start posting my availability as a freelancer on a couple different sites, and I guess we'll see how that goes.

This whole real-world thing just freaks me out. I want to stay in college forever.
